Pub operator JD Wetherspoon has secured its first franchise site in one of Scotland’s most historic university towns with the launch of a new pub at the University of St Andrews Students’ Association.
The new venue is set to open on 4 September and will operate from the Students’ Association building with its own dedicated entrance. The site will continue to be owned and operated by the Students’ Association under a franchise partnership with Wetherspoon.
In a statement published by the Students’ Association yesterday (19 May), the organisation said the partnership had been approved following the finalisation of a loan agreement with the university.
It said: “This partnership will bring new opportunities, increased employment and better-value food and drink. It supports our ambition to develop this space into a vibrant, relevant hub of student life – one that is welcoming, inclusive and shaped by the needs of our students.”
The project will involve a full refurbishment and rebrand of the space, including a redesigned bar and upgraded kitchen facilities to support an expanded food and drink offer for students and the wider public. Students will also be invited to submit suggestions for the pub’s new name.
The St Andrews opening marks the latest expansion of Wetherspoon’s franchise model within the higher education sector. The pub chain already operates franchised university sites at Newcastle and Hull, while new openings at Birmingham and Surrey universities are due to launch in July.
Outside higher education, Wetherspoon also has franchise agreements with holiday park operator Haven and family-owned dining group the Papas Group.
Wetherspoon has been approached for comment.
