The Blackistons said they had made the “bittersweet” decision to move on
The long-standing owners of Morston Hall hotel in Norfolk have sold the property after more than three decades.
Tracy and Galton Blackiston, who opened the five-AA-red-star hotel in 1992, said they had made the “bittersweet” decision to move on.
Morston Hall occupies a 17th century country house in Blakeney and has held a Michelin star and four AA rosettes at its fine dining restaurant for 25 years.
It has been sold to hotelier Henry Elworthy, who purchased the business outright in April. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
It is understood chef Galton stayed on for several months as a handover but no longer has any involvement in the hotel.
Tracy said in a statement: “After more than thirty years at the helm, we made the emotional decision to sell Morston Hall hotel, the place that has been so much more than a business it has been my home, my life, and my first baby.
“When I first opened Morston Hall in 1992, it was simply a house with potential. Over the years, with hard work, passion, and the support of an incredible team, it grew into one of the country’s most celebrated hotels, renowned for its Michelin-starred food and warm Norfolk hospitality.
“Through dedication and innovation, we were able to put North Norfolk firmly on the culinary map, welcoming guests from all over the world and earning countless awards and recognitions along the way. But what makes me proudest is the number of talented young people who began their careers here and have gone on to achieve remarkable success in their own right.
“Letting go of Morston Hall is bittersweet. It holds decades of memories, friendships, and unforgettable moments. But all good things must come to an end and I know that its spirit of excellence and care will continue to live on.”
Tracy said her focus was now on No1 Cromer, the couple’s two-AA-rosette restaurant and fish and chip shop on the Norfolk coast.
"The industry has given me so much, and I look forward to continuing to give back in every way I can," she added.
Galton began his career at Miller Howe in the Lake District, working his way up to the position of head chef. He then worked in restaurants in New York, Canada, South Africa and London before moving to Norfolk.
A year after the couple took over Morston Hall, it won the Newcomer Award at the 1993 Cateys.
