At just 25, Alexander Horswill has already rewritten the playbook on hospitality education – as assistant professor at Edge Hotel School, University of Essex, he is the UK’s youngest hospitality lecturer.
A former student of the school, Horswill returned to lead with the same energy he once brought to the classroom. His journey from undergraduate to lecturer in just a few short years is marked by standout achievements, including being named ‘Best Teacher’ by the school’s students in 2024 and consistently ranking in the top tier for student satisfaction.

He’s also revamped the curriculum, championing innovative methods like TikTok learning and sensory seminars to boost engagement. Horswill’s innovative teaching consistently ranks him in the top 5% of teaching staff, outperforming colleagues with a combined experience of over 50 years.

Who has been your biggest industry champion?
“Adrian Martin my former lecturer and vice principal of the Edge Hotel School has been my biggest industry champion. I met him eight years ago as a student at Edge Hotel School, and after completing my degrees, one phone call from him changed everything. At 22, he invited me to return as a lecturer. I was unsure, but he believed in me when I did not believe in myself. He supported me through every challenge and helped me grow. Now 25, with three years of teaching experience, I am incredibly grateful for the impact that one conversation and his continued support has had on my career.”
What excites you about your future in hospitality?
“If you had told me after finishing my master’s degree in 2021 that I would spend the next three years working as a lecturer, I would never have believed it. Hospitality has taken me on a journey I did not expect, and that is exactly what excites me about the future – it is full of possibility. I may not know what is around the corner, but I do know that hospitality is a career for life. Whether it is a guest or a colleague, connecting with people and making them smile is what I want to do for the rest of my life.”
