The Drey has been positioned as a ‘room-only’ hotel offering minimal amenities
A 125-bedroom tech-driven hotel with minimal staff and no reception desk is to launch in London’s Earl’s Court later this year.
Guests of the Drey will be able to check-in online, enter their rooms via keyless access on their phones and manage their stay through a dedicated app.
A press release announcing plans for the hotel said the property aims to “eliminate costly on-site extras in favour of a room-only model enhanced by technology”.
"The result: reduced overheads for operators and affordable, fuss-free stays for guests," the announcement said.
Instead of a lobby bar and restaurant, the hotel will offer vending machines filled with products from independent brands.
Cheaper rooms will be windowless, but all will feature rain showers, coffee machines and toiletries from London-based fragrance house Gabar.
The bedrooms will range in size from Cosy King for solo travellers and couples to Family Rooms that can accommodate up to six people, complete with bunk beds.
Room rates in December start from around £168 for the windowless ’Hideaway’ double room and rise to around £393 for the six-person ’Warren’ with bunk beds. Accessible rooms will also be available.
The hotel plans to partner with local cafes, bars and shops to create a neighbourhood feel for guests.
The Drey is the latest hotel to cut back on amenities to create a more basic experience at a lower price. Earlier this year Zedwell launched a 1,000 room capsule hotel in London’s Piccadilly, where guests can stay in two-metre-long pods for around £30 a night.
