Hotels across the UK give up their rooms for 1,000 volunteers a year. Adam S Terpening, charity director at Room to Reward, explains how it works
I have been fortunate to work in hotels all my professional life. This wonderful industry has given me unforgettable experiences with jobs at Forte Hotels, Harbour Hotels and more. However, nothing in my career has highlighted just what a special place hospitality is than the support of Room to Reward, a journey I started 10 years ago.
Back in 2015, Nicolas Roach – owner of the Nici in Bournemouth and then-chair of Harbour Hotels – asked me a question: what do hotels do with unsold rooms? We all know when the busiest times of year are going to be, but we also know when we will have some empty rooms. Surely, rather than going to waste, they can be put to better use?
That was the idea from which Room to Reward has grown. Unsold rooms are given to inspirational volunteers to enjoy a well-earned break in recognition of the time they give up for people and places in need.
Like any new idea, you need early supporters to get up and running. Harbour Hotels started the journey and remains an incredible supporter to this day. Elite Hotels, Legacy Hotels, Starboard Hotels, Bespoke Hotels and Iconic Luxury Hotels were also early joiners, and I’m eternally grateful to them for seeing the value in our mission all those years ago.

We now partner with 50 groups and 950 hotels, serviced apartments, inns and holiday parks across the UK. Collectively, these wonderful partners have donated 3,500 breaks to volunteers nominated by 1,000 organisations. We ask for two breaks a year: one to two nights for two people, B&B, outside of busy times and always subject to availability. We also ask hotels what organisations they or their team support so they can join and make nominations, and have arranged breaks for volunteers from fellow industry charities such as Hospitality Action, the Hotel School, Springboard and the Clink Charity.
Quite simply, volunteers are the lifeblood of our society. More than 100,000 people volunteer within the NHS, providing services such as transport to appointments and companionship on wards. Countless more support our health sector through their organisations, such as air ambulance charities or hospital charities, and more than 170 of these volunteers have enjoyed a Room to Reward break. Ninety per cent of grassroots sports clubs rely on volunteers, from coaches and officials to administrators and groundskeepers, and more than 110 of these volunteers have been rewarded with a short break.

Every day, we hear incredible stories about ordinary people doing extraordinary things. From providing end-of-life companionship in hospices, answering crisis calls and supporting struggling families to cleaning our beaches and rivers, caring for animals and mentoring young people. The list is endless; the impact of volunteering is limitless.
This year, 1,000 volunteers will enjoy a Room to Reward break. Our aim is to deliver a recurring 2,000 breaks a year – something that would take less than 1% of the annual number of unsold rooms. If you can spare a handful of empty rooms a year, please find out more and get in touch.
