The pilot scheme will see Deliveroo-branded drones serving customers in Dublin
Deliveroo has launched drone deliveries in Dublin in partnership with global drone delivery operator Manna.
The drones are expected to significantly reduce wait times, flying at speeds of up to 80km/h, which will enable drop-offs within three minutes.
Each drone is monitored by a dedicated dispatcher throughout its flight, and food is lowered to the ground via a biodegradable tether. Customers are able to track their order on the app as usual.
The pilot scheme is based in Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, and will enable diners within a 3km radius to order from local restaurants such as Musashi, WowBurger, Boojum and Elephant & Castle.
It forms part of Deliveroo’s plans to test out how the drones can help serve suburban and harder to reach locations.
Over the next six months, the delivery business will seek to expand the branded drone service to more restaurants, as well as its growing grocery and retail arm.
Deliveroo sees the prospect of drone deliveries being expanded into other regions, dependent on regulatory approval.
Manna has already completed more than 170,000 delivery flights in Dublin 15.
Carlo Mocci, chief business officer at Deliveroo, said: “Our mission is to bring local neighbourhood favourites to as many people’s doors as possible, and constantly raise the bar on the experience and service we provide, so I’m thrilled to launch drone deliveries in Dublin today.
“We’re excited to explore how drones can help us reach new customers, complementing our existing rider model and if successful, the prospect of expanding drone deliveries across Ireland and into other markets.”
Bobby Healy, CEO and founder of Manna Air Delivery, added: “Air delivery is fast, clean and safe, offering a new avenue for local businesses to reach more consumers. Manna Air Delivery is proud to partner with Deliveroo, a platform trusted by top local restaurants and eateries, to bring this innovative delivery experience to customers."
Deliveroo was founded in 2013 by William Shu and Greg Orlowski and operates across nine markets.
Last month, it was confirmed US food delivery app DoorDash will acquire the British delivery giant for £2.9b.
