The £266m deal was announced in April, following speculation that the owners of the Netherlands-based hotel chain were exploring a sale
Marriott International has completed its acquisition of lifestyle hotel brand CitizenM.
The £266m deal was announced in April, following speculation that the owners of the Netherlands-based hotel chain were exploring a sale in 2024.
The current CitizenM portfolio, which spans 37 open hotels comprising close to 9,000 rooms across more than 20 cities in the United States, Europe and Asia Pacific, is being integrated into Marriott’s systems and platforms.
CitizenM’s existing pipeline of two hotels totalling more than 300 rooms will also be added to Marriott’s portfolio.
Until CitizenM properties are fully integrated, which is scheduled for later this year, guests will still be able to book on CitizenM’s digital channels.
Marriott added there are “more details to come” about CitizenM’s own subscription programme once the hotel group becomes a fully participating brand within the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty scheme.
Anthony Capuano, president and chief executive of Marriott International, said: “As travellers continue to seek innovative lodging offerings that blend technology with genuine, people-first hospitality, the CitizenM brand is the perfect addition to our portfolio.
“Marriott has proven success in growing select-service lifestyle offerings, including our AC, Moxy and Aloft brands, and we look forward to accelerating CitizenM’s global reach with our guests and Marriott Bonvoy members around the world.”
CitizenM was founded in 2008 and offers “affordable luxury” to guests, with compact, technology-enabled rooms, conceptual artwork, rooftop bars and a number of co-working spaces.
CitizenM opened its first UK hotel in Glasgow in September 2010, with room rates starting from £49. It has since opened four properties in London, including in Shoreditch and Tower Bridge.
