Patisserie Valerie to reopen 10 stores after growth in online sales

Patisserie Valerie set to reopen 10 of its stores four years after it fell into administration.

The café chain is reinvesting proceeds from online growth.

Patisserie Valerie once had almost 200 stores across the UK but closed 71 of them in early 2019 when it fell into administration, affecting up to 900 staff. Over the course of four years, it closed further cafes, reducing its store count to 28 as of 2023.

The struggling chain was taken over Irish private equity firm Causeway Capital, who reportedly bought the remaining 100 cafes from Patisserie Holdings, the listed parent company, for £5m in February 2019.

Causeway Capital partner Matt Scaife told The Caterer the café chain is "initially focused" on reopening 10 stores as part of a "mini store refurbishment and investment programme".

He added: "This follows on from the successful digital brand work we have completed over the past few years on our nationwide cake delivery website which has really resonated with customers."

Branches will reopen in Cambridge and Bristol next month, followed by more over the next few months.

After the completion of the 10 new re-openings, Patisserie Valerie's UK store count will be 38.
