The Caterer’s round up of the latest job changes and appointments in the hospitality industry’s supply chain
Supplier personnel changes in the hospitality industry have been happening thick and fast this spring, with many people switching roles in the food, beverage, equipment and technology sectors.
We round-up some of the latest appointments and promotions to watch.
Food and beverage wholesaler Booker is strengthening its drinks division with the appointment of Pete Bexton (pictured above) as director of trading for beers, wines and spirits. He will oversee trading and sourcing, to help implement the company’s beers, wines and spirits (BWS) growth strategy within both the on- and off-trade. Bexton joins the business following 17 years in senior positions at Tesco, 15 of these within alcoholic drinks. His most recent role was category director for prepared foods, and he brings expertise in strategic category management, range optimisation and customer experience enhancement.
Coffee roaster and equipment supplier Matthew Algie has appointed Thomas Heinen as its new managing director, bringing more than 25 years of leadership experience across the coffee, foodservice and hospitality equipment industries. Heinen, who has held senior roles at coffee machine supplier WMF Group, ITW Cooking Europe and MEC2, joins Glasgow-headquartered Matthew Algie at a pivotal time for the business, following its integration with German coffee group Tchibo. Enhancing customer service will be a key focus under Heinen’s leadership, with 10 new engineers set to join the company’s technical support network across the UK and Ireland.

Diageo will welcome Barry O’Sullivan as its Great Britain managing director from 1 July. O’Sullivan has spent the past four years in the same role for the company’s Irish division, joining the drinks firm in 2021 after serving as managing director for Mars Petcare in Australia and New Zealand, with previous roles for Mars in Mexico, the Middle East, Turkey and Africa. He will replace Nuno Teles, who, after a three-year stint, will move to managing director of Diageo Mexico. Teles will continue in his existing role until O’Sullivan’s arrival.

British distilled rum brand DropWorks has appointed Graham Appleyard as its new chief executive officer. As Appleyard steps into his new position to drive the company’s ambitious growth strategy, guiding the brand’s next phase from start-up to scale-up, Lewis Hayes continues his role as founder and master distiller. Appleyard co-founded Flintlock Brand Marketing Consultancy and has a track record of revitalising global brands and driving commercial success. He worked at Diageo, spearheading brand strategies for Guinness, Baileys and Pimm’s, among others, and leading the joint venture with Moët Hennessy.

Dole Packaged Foods has appointed Erik Hamel as its new European managing director, replacing Isabelle Spindler-Jacobs. Hamel has been the firm’s finance director since 2020, and will now continue to drive the company’s transformation, focusing on both short-term and long-term category growth, while promoting Dole’s sustainability work. Before joining the packaged fruit and healthier snack producer, Hamel worked for Heineken for more than 25 years, covering roles in finance, sales and general management across various European markets.

Warewasher and food waste equipment supplier Meiko UK has refreshed its sales team. Phil Walley (pictured below) is the new sales director, tasked with driving the firm’s sales strategy, fostering strong relationships and delivering exceptional results across all sectors. Tim Harris has become head of national accounts. His extensive expertise in managing large-scale accounts will be integral in strengthening Meiko’s national reach, ensuring the highest levels of service, and expanding relationships with key clients. Meanwhile, Lee Hackett and Ross Genner will be driving senior regional manager roles, focusing on growth, innovation and customer satisfaction.

Yorkshire-based food wholesaler Turner Price has elevated four senior team members to its board. Steve Potter was promoted from operations controller to operations director. Tracey Shillito, formerly head of sales north, and Jason Watkins, previously head of sales south, have both been appointed as sales directors. Tom English has become digital and marketing director, having previously held the role of head of marketing and e-commerce. Additionally, the company has further strengthened its senior leadership team with the internal appointments of Gemma Scholes as head of buying and Liz Watson as head of finance.

Hobart has moved Jeff Priest (right) from technical sales executive to warewash product specialist, after Chris Mansell retired from the role following a 30-year career in the catering equipment sector. Priest has been with the Peterborough manufacturer for 16 years.

Guest operations platform SuiteOp appointed Jordan Cohen as its new head of growth. He will drive outbound and inbound demand generation, cultivating property management system and ecosystem partnerships and overseeing conference strategy and thought leadership initiatives. Cohen joins SuiteOp with a track record in property technology and data-analytics software as a service. Most recently, he served as director of business development at Radix/redIQ, where he played a pivotal role in growing annual recurring revenue from $1m to $10m, leading to the successful acquisition of redIQ.

Saltire Rare Malt, based in Falkland, Fife, has taken on Jan Damen as European sales director. He brings with him 25 years of single malt whisky experience, heading up the roles of operations director for Europe at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, group commercial and operations director at the Artisanal Spirits Company and general manager at the Single Cask.

Tom King has joined HTG Trading as key account manager. This new role will cover multiple brands in the HTG portfolio, working with both the Hubbard Systems and Taylor UK divisions, including products such as Scotsman ice-makers, Taylor soft serve ice-cream machines, Eloma combi-ovens and TurboChef high speed ovens. He will be responsible for managing some of the market’s largest customers, as well as being tasked with bringing on board new chain accounts, growing sales revenue and helping to enhance the overall customer experience.

Scottish food ingredients firm Macphie has appointed Ed Widdowson as its new chief executive officer. Widdowson’s appointment marks the fourth-generation family leadership for the foodservice firm. Prior to joining Macphie in 2017, Widdowson worked in strategy, sales and marketing for companies including Procter & Gamble and Duracell UK. Since joining the family company, which was founded in 1928, Widdowson has worked as head of sales, site director at the company’s manufacturing headquarters in Aberdeenshire, as well as strategy, people and sustainability director.

Food printer manufacturer DTM Print has brought in Robert Boyce as its new UK sales manager. He brings with him more 14 years of experience in the printing industry, with a background in sales and business development. In his new role, Boyce will support existing customers and explore new business opportunities.

Cooking equipment manufacturer Alto-Shaam has further expanded its UK team by appointing James Olbort to the newly-created role of commercial leader. He will be responsible for driving strategic growth across the UK, developing and implementing new sales strategies, building long-term partnerships with dealers and consultants and ensuring high levels of customer service and support. A trained engineer, Olbort joins Alto-Shaam with almost 30 years’ experience in the foodservice industry, latterly as business development manager for CED Fabrications.

Dino Labbate has joined AG Barr as chief commercial officer to drive a portfolio of beverage brands including Irn-Bru, Rubicon, Funkin and Boost. Prior to this, he spent seven years at Britvic, most recently as GB commercial director for hospitality. With previous roles at Kraft Heinz, Burton’s Biscuits and Northern Foods, Labbate brings much experience from across all channels of the food and drink industry.

Commercial kitchen and equipment supplier Vision Commercial Kitchens has appointed Ross McAuley (pictured) as finance director and Stan Cookson as operations and compliance director. Previously, the finance and operations functions were combined under a single role. This restructuring is designed to optimise operational efficiency, enhance client experience and strengthen the company’s partnerships with suppliers and customers. Cookson was promoted from the operations and compliance manager role, while McAuley brings over a decade of finance leadership within the construction industry.

English winemaker Chapel Down has appointed Lourens (Louan) Mouton as chief financial officer, company secretary and director, replacing Rob Smith. Mouton is a chartered accountant with experience in consumer goods organisations, including group finance director at Fevertree Drinks and more recently as CFO and board director at Typhoo Tea. Prior to that, he held roles at Natural Capital Partners, BHP Billiton and Deloitte.

Cooking equipment firms Valentine & Cuisinequip have added Mark Bradford as regional sales manager for London and the south east. With more than 30 years of kitchen and equipment experience under his belt, he will play a key role in supporting new and existing customers, taking the lead on product training for operators and being on hand for equipment queries and troubleshooting, as well as driving growth across his region. His CV includes roles as commercial development chef at Lactalis, area sales manager at Robot Coupe UK and southern area sales manager at Premier Cheese.
