Rick Stein takes over lease on local Cornish pub
Celebrity chef Rick Stein has taken over the lease of a local pub in Cornwall, just two miles from his seafood restaurant in Padstow.
Stein, together with business partner and ex-wife Jill, has signed a 15-year lease with the St Austell Brewery for the Cornish Arms pub at St Merryn.
The village pub has been part of the independent Cornish brewer's 169 strong estate since 1926 and Adam Luck, St Austell Brewery estate director, said the company was "delighted" to work with Stein.
"Good food is an ever more important part of any pub's success and it is wonderful news that top chefs are choosing to operate good quality pubs in addition to restaurants and bistros," he said.
Rick Stein added: "This pub has long played a vital part in St Merryn village life and I'm determined that the Cornish Arms maintains this role.
"Rather than create a "gastro-pub" or restaurant, we'll work with St Austell Brewery and with the pub's customers to ensure the Cornish Arms stays a welcoming, traditional community pub, which also happens to serve excellent pub food."
Rick Stein is the latest chef to take on the tenancy of a St Austell Brewery pub after former Michelin-starred Paul Ripley, who spent more than ten years as Rick's head chef, took up the reins at the St Kew Inn, near Wadebridge in October 2008.
