Night Time Industries Association welcomes reopening of Brixton Academy

The reopening of the O2 Brixton Academy 16 months after a fatal crush led to the deaths of two people has been welcomed by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA).

Chief executive of the NTIA Michael Kill said: "Brixton Academy has consistently held a special place in the hearts of music aficionados, and its cultural significance is immeasurable. We have consistently advocated for its safe reopening, and today we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ensuring its continued success as a safe hub for live music and nightlife."

Rebecca Ikumelo, a 33-year-old mother-of-two, and security guard Gaby Hutchinson, 23, died in hospital after a large number of people tried to force entry during a sold-out performance by Nigerian afrobeats artist Asake on 15 December 2022.

Lambeth Council closed the venue and suspended the its licence following a request by the Metropolitan Police, who were investigating the incident.

In September 2023, Lambeth Council revealed the venue could reopen once 77 new conditions were met, including the installation of stronger doors, new ticketing systems and better security and management at the venue.

The O2 Academy Brixton reopened on Friday (19 April) with tribute acts Nirvana UK and the Smyths. Following the gig the venue tweeted: "Thank you Nirvana UK, The Smyths UK and thank you to your fans."

Kill added: "It is important to recognise at this point the immense efforts made by all parties to ensure a safe and successful reopening, as well as establishing a new operating best practice for safety within licensed and performance spaces across the UK.

"We also recognise the profound responsibility that accompanies this, and acknowledge the tragic events of December 2022 which resulted in the loss of two amazing individuals, Gaby Hutchinson and Rebecca Ikumelo, to which our heartfelt condolences remain with their families and friends."
