Travelodge doubles presence in Spain

Travelodge has acquired six hotels in Spain from Louvre Hotels Group, which has doubled the budget hotel group's presence in the Spanish market.

Five hotels were acquired on a freehold basis, while one is to be acquired on a long leasehold.

All six properties are currently branded Hotel Campanile and have been taken over by Spanish subsidiaries held within the Travelodge OpCo Group.

The hotels are located in Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Madrid and Murcia. Travelodge opened its first Spanish hotel in 2004 in Madrid.

Jo Boydell, chief executive of Travelodge, said: "Spain is an important market for us, with an established presence of six hotels and an experienced local management team. We recognise there are significant ongoing opportunities for our business, with the potential to offer good value and quality accommodation in many more locations across the country.

"Last year we identified the top 20 key markets to open a new hotel in Spain, where there is currently a shortage of good quality, low cost, branded accommodation to meet the needs of business and leisure guests."

She added: "We are excited to announce the acquisition of these properties from Louvre Hotels Group as part of our Spanish development strategy. This doubles our presence in Spain and gives us the ideal base to build our brand even further. We look forward to working with our new colleagues, and growing our hotel network further, providing further choice and great value to business and leisure travellers across Spain."

Louvre Hotels Group was founded in 1976 by the Taittinger family and merged with Golden Tulip Hospitality in 2009.

In 2015, the group was acquired by Jin Jiang International.

Travelodge was founded in 1985 and now has nearly 600 hotels and over 46,000 bedrooms across the UK, Ireland and Spain.

It posted revenue exceeding £1b for the first time in its results for the full-year ended 31 December 2023.
