Aladdin's mobster den bites the dust

Las Vegas's Aladdin Hotel-Casino disappeared under a 300-foot cloud of dust after 860 charges of dynamite were detonated to clear the site for a new $1.3b resort, due to open for business in April 2000.

The 17-storey, 1,100-bedroom hotel, which was visited by a host of mobsters and celebrities during its 32-year existence, will be replaced by a new 2,600-bedroom Aladdin Hotel-Casino, along with a 1,000-room property developed by restaurant group Planet Hollywood.
