Altnaharrie Inn's reopening is delayed by chef's illness

The Altnaharrie Inn, one of Britain's most northerly Michelin-starred restaurants, is temporarily closed.

It is understood that the chef, Gunn Eriksen, has back trouble and is awaiting an operation.

The two-starred restaurant, in Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands, is run by Eriksen and her husband, Fred Brown.

Brown, who bought the restaurant in 1976, runs the dining room, while his wife is in charge of the kitchen. She has worked there since 1980.

Altnaharrie closes each year in November and reopens the following Easter. It was due to reopen six weeks ago but did not.

Brown said a "medical reason" meant he and his wife had been unable to reopen the restaurant. He did not want to give any further details.

It is understood that he is working temporarily for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

He said: "I cannot go into detail, because I am not sure how long it will remain shut. We have every intention of reopening."
