Arcadian tops shares surge

A strong week for most companies saw Arcadian International, owner of the Great Eastern Hotel in London, leading the climbers with an 18% shares leap after its announcement that it is in talks with an unnamed bidder for the group.

Plans to expand PizzaExpress overseas and in the UK pushed shares up 12.85%, helped by a 58% jump in pre-tax profits to £16.2m for the year to June.

Granada's shares gained 10% after ruling out the disposal of its Méridien hotels but it is to sell some of its 65-strong Heritage chain within the next five years.

Airport caterer Alpha Airports marked the end of a torrid period with a 7.56% shares rise after a 40% pre-tax profits boost to £14m in its half-year results.

Greenalls shares slumped 12.62% after it admitted it had not invested enough in its pubs division. But Grosvenor Inns surged by 15.16% after a meeting with analysts over strong performance of its Slug & Lettuce brand.
