Australia's big cities turn in mixed results

The latest results from the Australian edition of the Andersen hotel industry benchmark survey shows September 2001 hotel performance was varied across the country's major cities.

September results for Sydney show a 52% fall in room rate and a 23% decline in occupancy, resulting in a 63% revpar decline, compared with the same period last year. This fall reflects the fact that both rates and occupancy were hugely boosted by the staging of the Olympic Games in September 2000.

Melbourne also showed a decline, with occupancy down by 2.5% and room rates down by 6%, resulting in a fall in revpar of 8.5%. Results at the Brisbane market were rosier however, with occupancy up by 21%, room rates up by 11% and revpar up by 34%.
