Bangor loses tourist centre

Hoteliers in Bangor, Gwynedd, have failed in their battle to prevent the relocation of the city's tourist information centre (TIC) to a site out of town, for this season at least.

The cathedral city's TIC is to reopen on the A55 at Llys-y-Gwent in two weeks' time. It is situated on a site owned by Forte and adjacent to a Forte Travelodge.

Bangor hoteliers believe the new location will mean that travellers will no longer come into the city centre.

They are also angered that Forte Travelodge has now had its planning application to build 30 further bedrooms granted.

Patricia Aiken, who offered a room in her hotel to house the TIC, told Caterer that she would continue to fight to keep the TIC operating in the city centre.

North Wales Tourism has rejected the offer of a room in Mrs Aiken's British Hotel, claiming that "allegations of business distortion may occur". But it has admitted that the A55 site is unsatisfactory and it will continue to look for another rent-free site in the city centre.
