Birmingham Copthorne under threat from council

Birmingham's Copthorne hotel could be demolished if development ideas being discussed by the City Council are formalised.

The council said it was considering "development options" but had not decided what action to take.

It is understood the council has considered plans to demolish Birmingham's Central Library and surrounding Paradise Circus area, to make way for a two million square feet development of offices, shops, restaurants and bars.

If this happened, the 212-bedroom Copthorne, which has 120 staff, would have to go.

Millennium and Copthorne owns the freehold to the building.

Stephen Price, the company's UK provincial hotels director of operations, said it had received no official notification from the council about the property.
