Blight threat to potato crop

A Risk of potato blight over the next few months may lead to a rise in prices.

The British Potato Council says there is an increased chance of blight this year because of the wet June weather.

"We are advising farmers to protect their crops by spraying, but a lot will depend on the rest of the summer," said a spokesman. "If we have a horrible August, there could be problems."

Another potential effect on prices is the severe flooding in Poland and Germany, which could lead to increased demand for UK potatoes on the Continent.
