Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is to open its first boutique hotel in Putrajaya, Malaysia, in October.

The 120-bedroom hotel, located 25km south of capital city Kuala Lumpur, will - unusually for Shangri-La - be a pure management contract. If successful, the boutique idea could be repeated elsewhere.

Shangri-La owns and/or operates 38 hotels. Most of these are in Asia but the company is keen to expand in Europe. It is understood to be looking at several sites in London, including the former Battersea Power Station.

Any development would ideally be newly built and wholly owned by Shangri-La, but a spokesman said that anything would be considered.
