jurys verdict

Strong performance from Jurys Hotel Group's Irish hotels helped lift pre-tax profits by 36% to £10.7m for the six months to the end of October. Turnover for the period was £37m. This year the group will add a further hotel in London's Islington and a 190-room hotel in Edinburgh.

public smoking ban

There is widespread public support for a smoking ban in public places, according to a poll of 1,200 adults carried out by research company ICM for the Guardian newspaper.

As the Government prepares new policy papers on smoking, the survey found more than 60% in support of a ban in restaurants and bars.

tupe outcome

The long-awaited Government consultation document on the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) regulations (TUPE) was published this week.

The Department of Trade and Industry is inviting views on its proposals. To obtain a copy, call the DTI on 0171-215 5000.
