Man charged with chef's manslaughter

A man has been charged with the manslaughter of Toby Exley, the chef de partie from Fräre Jacques, Kingston, who was killed with his girlfriend Karen Martin in a road incident earlier this month (Caterer, 23 October, page 7).

Jason Humble appeared before magistrates last week and was remanded in custody. A second man, Keith Collier, charged with assisting an offender, was also remanded in custody.

Hong Kong trip for RAGB winners

Hong Kong beckons for the winners of the 1997 Young Chef/Young Waiter of the Year competition, announced at the Landmark Hotel, London, on Monday.

James McLean, 24, junior sous chef at the Mandarin Oriental, London, took the chef award, while Michael Currie, 23, head waiter at Paul Heathcote's Restaurant, Longridge, Lancashire, carried off the top waiter prize.

The annual competition is organised by the Restaurateurs Association of Great Britain.
