UK ‘LAGS BEHIND'
THE UK Government is lagging behinds its counterparts in mainland Europe in terms of the importance it attaches to tourism, concludes a new survey of west of England hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfast establishments and caravan parks.
According to 251 of the 332 respondents (75%), their European competitors get far more support from their national governments than businesses in the South-west.
"Hotels and tourism generally are major employers and a serious industry," said the man organising the survey, Robin Teverson, who is the prospective Liberal Democrat Euro-candidate for Cornwall and West Plymouth in next month's elections.
"It's also obvious from the results that the industry has failed to make any great recovery," he said. "It seems to be bumping along the bottom."
The survey, published last week, was completed by 332 businesses responsible for 7,471 accommodation units, 7,000 full-time jobs and a combined turnover of about £40m.
BRITISH CHOICE
CHOICE Hotels International, the US franchise giant, has signed up two more hotels in the British Isles, taking its portfolio in the UK and Ireland to 20
properties.
The 40-bedroom Crown & Cushion Hotel in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, and Randles Court Hotel in Killarney, which has 37 bedrooms, have both assumed Choice's top-of-the-range Clarion brand.
