Clinton Calls in

HARTWELL House, the Buckinghamshire country house hotel that was once the residence in exile of French King Louis XVIII, played host last weekend to US President Bill Clinton, in the UK for the D-Day anniversary commemorations.

Mr Clinton, who sandwiched a visit to the hotel between meetings with the prime minister and the Queen, broadcast his weekly US radio address from the library and had a meeting with acting Labour leader Margaret Beckett.

Before leaving, he also took time out to meet general manager Jonathan Thompson (left) and Richard Broyd, chairman of Historic House Hotels, which owns the 47-bedroom hotel.
