D-Day brings in £40m
The 50th anniversary D-Day celebrations generated over £40m in visitor revenue, according to research published last week by the Southern Tourist Board.
More than 420,000 day visitors came into the region for the 350 D-Day events between April and September. More than 160,000 visitors stayed 550,000 nights in the South's hotels, guesthouses, bed & breakfasts and self-catering establishments.
Nearly 70,000 American visitors attended the celebrations, staying more than 160,000 nights and spending over £10m.
The board conducted a two-and-a-half year marketing campaign for the D-Day 50th anniversary, which included the appointment of a D-Day executive in New York.
The Southern Tourist Board is now co-ordinating an information service for the VE/VJ Day events taking place across the country in 1995.
