Caterers keep calm at French sewage reports

Health officials are insisting caterers need not panic at news that some French processing plants are being investigated over reports that pig and chicken feed has been mixed with human sewage.

French authorities have admitted residue from septic tanks was discovered in raw material destined for animal meal at the end of 1998. But they insist that no sewage is now mixed with the feed.

EU food safety inspectors are to investigate the reports.

A Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food spokesman said: "There is no reason to panic. We are satisfied that the French have taken the appropriate steps and dealt with the issue."

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health also said it was "not worried".
