Charity inaugurates hunger action week

Over the past three years, UK restaurants have raised nearly £30,000 in support of Action Against Hunger, one of the leading international organisations in the fight against malnutrition.

By donating part of their proceeds to the charity on United Nations International World Food Day (16 October), they have contributed to bringing relief to those suffering from a great shortage of food.

Due to increasing support from the restaurant industry, the charity has decided to launch its first Action Against Hunger Week, from 16 to 22 October. "Year after year a growing number of celebrities, including Ainsley Harriott and Antony Worrall Thompson, are backing the appeal," said Cara Wilkins, Action Against Hunger Week co-ordinator. "This year, our focus will be to create a real incentive for the public to eat out, enjoy a good meal and contribute to the appeal."

Initiatives include organising an Action Against Hunger Week event, donating a percentage of turnover, and selling Action Against Hunger fortune cookies.

Of every £1 spent by the charity, 96p is used directly for its relief activities, which have included involvement in emergency situations in Kosovo, Macedonia, Cambodia and the Cameroons. "Longer term, we help with the distribution of seeds and tools so that, eventually, these people can look after themselves," added Wilkins.
