China gives the go-ahead for Everest hotel
Planning permission for a hotel development in the foothills of Mount Everest has been granted by the Chinese Government.
The 52-bedroom hotel will be on the Tibet side of Everest, 6,000ft above sea level. It will have a mix of hotel accommodation for tourists and lodge-style accommodation for climbers, complete with bar and restaurant.
The location is already a well-established base camp for climbers, close to the main road from the Tibetan capital Lhasa to Kathmandu in Nepal. Building work is due to commence in April next year and will cost £2.3m.
