Council tries to block closures at Swallow

The Swallow Group, which has plans to shut its Sunderland and Sheffield breweries, may be forced into holding an extraordinary general meeting, following action by Durham County Council.

The council has written to 100 other local authorities that put their pension funds with Phillips & Drew, an investment management firm with an 18% stake in Swallow, to ask for their support in opposing the closures.

The company, which also wants to get rid of its entire estate of 664 tenanted pubs, is to be the subject of a debate in the House of Commons today (29 April).
