Curry for commuters
Getting into the spirit for World Curry Week (20-26 October, sponsored by Kingfisher Lager), Caterer hears of a new curry venture on the concourse. Travellers at Euston Station, London, now have the option of a take-away curry, instead of the usual burger or sandwich. Joshi's Kitchen opened earlier this month next to Platform 15.
Founded in 2000 by practising lawyer Sanjeev Joshi, the company began life in Reading, Berkshire, as an Internet home-delivery business. The range was fine-tuned last year before hitting the retail outlet in early October, cashing in on the continuing growth in Indian food sales in the UK.
But curry on the go? Joshi's Kitchen has developed an "in-hand eating format" - a carton, in other words, that enables customers to munch on their masala without mess.
The Joshi's menu includes a breakfast range "for those who like a spicier start to the day", among them an egg and bacon paratha (£3.79) and sausage shemi naan with tandoori mayo (£2.79). Lunch skips from the ubiquitous chicken korma (£3.99) to rogan Joshi (£4.59), which can be washed down with Indian brew Cobra, the house beer (£1.80). And there is a range of desserts, from gulab jamen (£1.39) to khir (£1.99). To finish, there's always Masaala Chai Latte, at £2.15.
And the Joshi logo, in case you're wondering, is not styled on the learned Sanjeev himself, "but a Bollywood-meets-Ali G restaurateur", explains Joshi, whose family is originally from the Punjab, the source of inspiration for the Kitchen menu.
