Down under move up
Latest figures from the Australian Wine Export Council (AWEC) confirm that Australian wine exports in 1995 finished the year almost 10% up on $407m.
AWEC chairman John Pendrigh said in the past 12 months there had been a compositional shift in Australian wine exports. "The industry has shifted the focus of its export push strongly in favour of higher-priced bottled wine exports." Exports to the UK were up 8% to $187m.
Australia now supplies almost 8% of the UK wine market (by volume). Some achievement, AWEC points out, given that a decade ago exports were below $3m.
