According to Honeywell, many systems intended to recirculate and/or filter air don't actually "clean" it to an acceptable standard because they are unable to deal with very small but particularly damaging small particles like tobacco smoke.

Honeywell tackles this problem electrostatically by first trapping larger particles in a mesh filter and then drawing them in and then charging them up electrostatically.

The particles are then become attracted onto aluminium collecting plates in a similar way to iron filings on a magnet. At the same time, clean air is gently blown out along the ceiling and down into the far corners of the room while dirty air is brought back into the centre of the room and up into the air cleaner.

The Honeywell range offers ceiling mounted cleaners from 400 to 2000 cu m/hour airflow with speed control via infra-red or wall mounted wired remote controller. Costs: from £2 per day. The company also makes flush fitting air cleaners particularly suited to rooms with suspended ceilings or where an inconspicuous unit is preferred.
