Filipino waiter died of rabies

A Filipino waiter living in London has become the first person in England to die from rabies in 15 years, an inquest heard last week.

St Pancras Coroner's Court heard that 55-year-old Hilario Laya contracted the rabies virus in March, after he was bitten by a dog while on holiday in the Philippines.

He was admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London on 30 April with a pain in his right forearm. He died a week later at London's University College Hospital.

Laya was living in St John's Wood in London, but no mention was made of the restaurant where he had worked.
