Security has been tightened at a new shopping mall where a McDonald's restaurant is due to open, after firebomb threats were made against the burger company.

Anti-McDonald's posters have been pasted on lampposts and empty shop windows in Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Bristol, where a restaurant is due to open. The flyers carry slogans such as "Stop cattle ranching, destroying forests, wildlife and soil. Stop McDestruction."

Graffiti on a wall also threatened that the restaurant would be firebombed. At least two other nearby businesses which supported the restaurant at a Bristol City Council planning meeting have also received hate mail and telephone calls.

A spokesman for McDonald's said: "There have been some leaflets which were fairly negative to McDonald's and graffiti about a firebomb. The contractors still have charge of the site and they have increased their security as a precaution."

A police spokesman said they were liasing with local traders to ensure they had sufficient security.
