Food report highlights eating-out anomalies
Fast-food giant McDonald's had 1,075 restaurants in the UK in 1999, according to research on eating out about to be published by Mintel.
The survey estimates people in the UK will spend £21.8b on eating out this year.
It also concludes that more fish and chips are eaten in Yorkshire and the North-east than anywhere else in the UK, whereas in the South more people eat in pubs, Indian and traditional British restaurants.
According to the findings, the average eating-out bill per person differs by region and peaks in London at £13.79 for a restaurant meal and £7.40 for a take-away.
