Football-crazy fans to pack pubs again
Pubs across England are expecting booming business tomorrow (Friday 21 June) when England play Brazil in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Millions of breakfasts, pints and soft drinks are due to be sold as spectators pack pubs up and down the country in time for the 7.30am kick-off.
Last week five million breakfasts and a million pints of beer or lager were drunk in Britain's pubs as four million people got up early to watch England draw 0-0 with Nigeria at the 25,000 pubs that screened the match.
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) said about 21 million pints of beer were drunk before closing time that day, three million more than in an average day.
And after England beat Denmark 3-0 on Saturday, the association reckons tomorrow's England match against Brazil could be even better for business.
The BBPA said food sales had been particularly good, with many spectators ordering a soft drink and some breakfast rather than a pint.
Despite the availability of early-morning beer, the BBPA said that reports back from members had been positive and that most people had been "acting very responsibly".
The BBPA estimates that each game England have played so far has been worth an extra £20m-£30m to the pub sector.
The industry has an average daily turnover of almost £55m.
