Fred Marik

Fred Marik, who was head of the hotel management and catering department at High Peak College in Buxton, Derbyshire, died at his Suffolk home on 1 May.

Born in Prague in 1928, Marik studied hotel management in Switzerland and worked on the Orient Express. Later, a failed attemptto escape communism landed Marik in aprison camp, fromwhere he escaped with the help of two Americans.

He arrived in England in 1949 and joined the college in Buxton in 1966. He worked there until 1986. The college says he trained more than 7,000 students, who are now working around the world as general managers, head waiters, commis chefs, housekeepers, receptionists and lecturers.
