French m-way food ‘appalling'

French motorway service stations have appalling hygiene standards, according to a survey by a French motoring magazine.

Research by Auto Plus found that half the sandwiches and one-third of the salads tested by food analysts were unfit for human consumption.

It examined ham and salad sandwiches and bowls of mixed salad at 40 motorway service stations in the country. One sandwich was 51,000 times above the legal germ limit and some of the salads were between three and 40 times above it.

One salad was even found to include traces of faeces, suggesting that it was prepared by someone who had not washed their hands after visiting the lavatory.
