Sam Gurney is the new GMB union organiser with responsibility for hotel, catering and leisure services in the London region. He takes over from Robert Badlan, who continues to work as a senior organiser.

Gurney, who has been with the union for two-and-a-half years, has previously worked in hotels and bars in Brighton.

He said that the hotel and catering sectors were traditionally not unionised, and a great deal of his time would be spent raising awareness of the union's existence and activities.

He added that overall membership of the union in the London area grew by 9.5% last year.
