Government continues tests on cows with BSE
The Government has dismissed claims that up to eight cows may have been infected with BSE through cattle blood in feed.
A Ministry of Agriculture spokesman said one case was thought to have arisen through maternal transmission and the others were still being tested.
The fears over infected blood followed research that suggested that diseases such as scrapie in sheep could be transferred through blood transfusions.
While a ban on the use of bovine blood in feed was lifted in 1995, the Meat and Livestock Commission said that, to the best of its knowledge, cattle blood was not now used in animal feed.
