Greenpeace targets burger giants in GM campaign

McDonald's and Burger King are among Greenpeace's latest targets in its campaign against genetically-modified food.

The charity is urging customers to telephone fast-food chains to demand that they offer meat, eggs and dairy products from animals that have not been reared on GM feed. GM crops form a major part of imported and unlabelled animal feed, which Greenpeace describes as "GM smuggled into our food chain by the back door".

Both fast-food chains have removed GM ingredients in response to customer concern but say lack of segregation in the USA makes it hard to source GM-free animal feed.

Burger King said it received 30 calls on GM issues last week, 20 more than it would normally expect. McDonald's said its careline had received just a handful of enquiries.
