Hospitality show's student challenge

A NEW class has been introduced to the Heart of England Salon Culinaire, which takes place at Hospitality Week 99 at Birmingham NEC from 25 to 28 January, specifically designed to encourage new talent in the hospitality industry.

The Student Chef Challenge, sponsored by Watson & Philip Foodservice and the United Kingdom Council of Chefs (UKCC), is open to college teams of three full-time students.

Ten teams have been selected to compete in front of a live audience in the Knorr-sponsored Practical Theatre where they will have to plan, prepare, cook and present their specially created three-course meal for four covers in one-and-three-quarter hours.

The final takes place on Tuesday 26 January at 2.15pm, when the teams will compete for the title and a prize of £200 for each team member. The second-placed team will get £100 for each member, while third place receives £50 each. The supporting lecturer of the top three teams also gets £200.

l To register for a free ticket to the show, call the Trade Ticket Hotline on 01203 426485. Tickets are free in advance or £15 on the door. Students by prior arrangement only - call 0181-910 7934.
