Hotel du Vin sees it has Heritage help

Hotel du Vin's campaign to stop a development in Winchester has won a crucial ally.

English Heritage stepped in last week just as planners were set to approve the plans for a block of flats opposite the Hotel du Vin group's hotel in the Hampshire city.

The city council has now postponed a decision on the plan, for talks with English Heritage.

The hotel is opposing the scheme because the development would block the view of Winchester Cathedral from five bedrooms (Caterer, 7 December 2000, page 7).

Robin Hutson, managing director of the hotel group, said of English Heritage's last-ditch intervention: "They left it to the 11th hour but I'm delighted they have come to our assistance."
