IHF in tax plea to government

The Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) has again called on the government to increase tax allowances to persuade housewives to return to work.

Last year it said 40,000 more people could re-enter the workforce if a IR£2,000-a-year tax-free allowance were introduced (Caterer, 4 March 1999, page 8).

In a pre-budget submission, the IHF has now asked for a personal tax allowance of up to IR£4,000 (£3,055) a year to cover childcare costs. It also wants employers to be allowed to pay workers up to IR£4,000 (£3,055) a year, per child, tax-free.

The IHF also wants VAT to be cut from 12.5% to 10%.

The Irish budget will be announced on 6 December.
