in brief
Poultry prices take off
The British Poultry Council has warned that a rise in the price of poultry is inevitable after it revealed that farmers are facing an estimated £190m increase in the cost of feed.
Price hikes for chicken, duck and turkey could be as much as 15-20%, because last year's widespread droughts pushed up the price of cereals used to make the animals' feed.
"There is considerable concern about the current cost of grain-based feed," said Mike Short of British Meat's poultry policy division. "But this is by no means unique to poultry, it is just another manifestation of the increasing price of cereals."
