Jobs boom if smokers quit
Job creation in the hospitality industry would mushroom if fewer people smoked, claims a report from the University of York's Centre for Health Economics.
The study, commissioned by the Health Education Authority, found that if the Government's Health of the Nation target of reducing smoking by 40% was met, up to 155,000 new jobs would be created. Many of these would be in the hospitality sector because money saved on cigarettes would be spent on leisure, the report concludes.
