John Arlott remembered with Rioja

If you want to support an unusual charity event, consider attending the John Arlott Rioja Dinner. They don't play cricket in Rioja, but his name will always be associated with wine, about which he wrote as fluently as he spoke about cricket.

The John Arlott Memorial Trust is a national charity chaired by newscaster Trevor McDonald. It contributes towards projects to improve the quality of village life, in particular it aims to create affordable housing and recreational facilities.

The dinner, sponsored by the Rioja Wine Exporters Group, is to take place at the Regent Hotel, London, on Monday 24 July, and will be attended by the Princess Royal. Other guests include Mike Brearley, Ted Dexter, Mike Gatting, Willie Rushton and Barry Norman. Tickets are £65. Apply to Janet Hart, 0171-235 6318.
