Meals sales are on the up
Following a period of stagnation at the beginning of 1996, caterers' sales picked up healthily in the last quarter to June 1996, according to the latest figures from research company Marketpower.
The Quarterly Catering Barometer, based on a sample of 750 caterers, measures changes in meals served. From April to June 1996, the overall index was 17 points up on the same period last year.
Peter Backman, managing director of Marketpower, said this increase reflected a general upturn in consumer spending and the fact that people are eating out more. "One of the reasons the market is doing well is that it is competitive on price. Margins are still under pressure," he said.
