MGM to open casino resort in Sheffield
Sheffield is to have a £250m casino resort following a deal between US gaming giant MGM Mirage and UK property company British Land.
The move will create 2,000 hospitality jobs. As well as a casino, the proposed leisure complex will feature other entertainment venues, restaurants, a hotel and a conference centre.
The site is next to British Land's Meadowhall Shopping Centre and the development is subject to obtaining the necessary planning permission and the Government introducing gaming reform.
New legislation is expected by the end of this year or early next year.
MGM, which last month bought greyhound track operator Wembley, has made the most aggressive move in a series of deals by big casino operators as legislative change draws near.
Other developments include: Accor Casinos entering talks with club operator Luminar; Harrah's striking a joint venture with Gala to build casino resorts; and Isle of Capri's plans to build casinos in Coventry and Manchester.
Terri Lanni, chairman and chief executive officer of MGM Mirage, said: "This agreement represents a further key element of our ambitious plans to invest in the UK."
