Michelin 2001 – how the countries fared
Germany
The 38th German guide lists 7,655 hotels and 1,663 restaurants. Four hundred are new, while 700 listed in the previous edition have been dropped.
Die Windmühle in Oeynhausen, Bad, joined the two-star brigade, which totalled 14 following the Residenz's promotion, the de-listing of the Schwanen in Haigerloch and the loss of a star at Le Val d'Or in Lafer's Stromburg, in Stromburg.
While 16 restaurants gained a star, 19 others lost theirs, leaving Germany with a total of 177 one-star restaurants.
Switzerland
Michelin lists 1,288 hotels and 833 restaurants in its eighth Swiss guide, which includes 134 new names. Most newcomers (some 124 establishments) fall into the "more affordable" categories, and Michelin points out that the guide lists more than 130 ethnic restaurants.
Switzerland saw two new entries on the two-star front, the Bruderholz in Basel and l'Auberge du Raisin in Cully. However, Le Béarn in Geneva dropped one of its three stars, leaving the double-star category with 10 names
Five restaurants gained their first star, but twice as many lost theirs, leaving Switzerland with 80 single-star restaurants.
Eighteen new Bib Gourmand awards brought the country's total tally to 115.
Italy
Michelin's 46th Italian guide features 420 new entries (against 487 withdrawals) among its list of 4,067 hotels and 3,135 restaurants.
The country's two-star bracket grew to 19 names with the addition of Arnolfo in Colle di Val d'Elsa, Miramonti l'Atro in Concesio, and La Pergola in Rome, although Al Bersagliere in Goito dropped its second star.
While 13 restaurants gained their first star, another 21 (including Harry's Bar in Venice) lost theirs, bringing Italy's total number of one-star restaurants to 187. Its Bib Gourmand tally grew to 170 with 36 new awards.
Spain and Portugal
The 29th edition lists 3,164 hotels and 2,547 restaurants in Spain, and 726 and 386 respectively in Portugal. It contains 520 newcomers, while 235 names have dropped out.
Spain's two-star sector expanded to eight as the Girasol in Moraira (Alicante) and La Broche in Madrid both gained their second stars, although Madrid's Zalacain restaurant dropped into the one-star bracket.
Ten Spanish restaurants gained their first stars, while eight lost them, leaving the country with 84 one-star premises.
Portugal gained a new single-star restaurant in the Henrique Leis at Almancil (Faro), but lost another with the delisting of the Ermitage, also at Almancil. It starts the year with one two-star and four one-star restaurants.
Twenty new Bib Gourmand awards boosted the region's total to 261 in Spain and 52 in Portugal.
